Lengthen The Life Of Your Dishwasher: 3 Maintenance And Care Tips

A dishwasher isn't a necessity, but it is a nice appliance to have to make doing dishes a little easier. This appliance has moving parts and can get dirty, so it needs some TLC in order to keep it working like new and to extend the life of it. See below for some care and maintenance tips to lengthen the life of your dishwasher:

1. Use The Proper Detergent

Your dishwasher needs detergent in order to clean your dishes and sanitize them. Using the wrong dishwasher detergent may clean your dishes, but it could be detrimental to your dishwasher. The wrong type could cause too many bubbles and overflow in your kitchen. It could also cause a buildup of detergent film on the inside of your dishwasher, or in the drain, which could clog your appliance and eventually cause it to back up. This can lead to quite a mess, so use only detergent made for dishwashers. Read your appliance instruction booklet for details.

2. Clean It Often

Yes your dishwasher cleans dishes, but it should be cleaned to remove any food particles and residue leftover inside. Wipe down the inside with a vinegar-soaked cloth. Wipe down the washtub and detergent bins, and also the door seals. Give it a deeper clean by cleaning the drain below the sprayer arms, this is where you'll find most of the leftover debris. If needed, remove the sprayer arms to clear out calcium buildup that may be clogging the sprayers, and to get to the drain filter.

3. Replace Parts As Needed

To keep your appliance in good shape, replace broken parts as needed. If you have a leaky seal, replace it with a new one. If you have broken tines in the dish organizer, replace the broken tines with a new caps to prevent them from scratching your dishes, pots and pans. Also replace broken detergent bin lids, or broken sprayer arms. All of these replacement parts can be found at your local parts retailer, online or you can call an appliance repairman for help making these repairs. Replacing broken parts is much cheaper than purchasing a new appliance, so inspect your appliance often and make repairs as needed.

Dishwashers are a great appliance to have to make cleaning up much faster. Keep your dishwasher in great shape by caring for it and maintaining it properly to lengthen the life of this appliance. Contact a company like American Appliance INC for more information and assistance.
